This mushroom has an orangish-brown, suedelike cap with white pores underneath. At first it reminds me of a bolete, but it's way too tough, and the pores aren't tubes, as they are on a bolete. The telltale feature is underground, a long black 'root'. Though the mushroom seems to be growing on the ground, it is always found together with dead wood. This cap was 20 cm (about 8 inches) across, and it was in such good shape, I didn't have the heart to dig up the root.
