The only way to tell Xanthoria polycarpa apart from Xanthomendosa montana (look alikes) is to see if one has rhizines. If there are rhizines then it is xanthomendoza. in your pic on the top, it looks like one single rhizine may be showing. its questionable but just based on pics i would call this xanthomendoza montana. just start looking for those rhizines. Another way to tell them apart is to look at the medula for conidia (microscope). Xanthomendoza has rod shaped conidia while Xanthoria has round conidia. But in the field looking for rhizines should do it. :-)
