Ecoregion: Southern Outer Piedmont Habitat: Found in fallen section of oak branch â" 24"/61cm long x 5"/13cm diameter â" lying on leaf litter approximately 5m from shore of reservoir. Branch had opening on underside. Pore surface and 'spacer' visible without opening the cavity. Bark removed to expose cavity for additional examination. Nearest_Tree: Hardwood, oak (species not determined) Habit: Single Fruitbody: Fungus had digested core wood in branch, producing a cavity. Pore surface deep red-brown; pores irregular, 3-4pores/mm; firm. Pore surface extended for 18"/46cm in the 24"/61cm section of branch; Several sections of pores extended from the surface of the pore surface to the underside of the bark; they varied in height according to their location in the cavity and appeared to act as 'spacers' to prevent the bark from collapsing in on the pore surface. Spore_Print: Bright yellow (deposit on bark) Remarks: Recognized by sight. Previously introduced to this fungus by Bill Sheehan/observation MO-231998.
