Fruiting body of 20 caps joined in a single stipe, overall 30cm X 16cm X 16cm. Individual caps to 11cm W, rising from off-center fleshy stalks fanning upward and out in a curving shape. Inrolled edges. Caps grey-tan and velvety. Pore surface white and smooth w/ fine pores. White spores. Flesh white, nonstaining, uniform, firm but flexible and somewhat brittle. Stipe 14cm across, apparently growing from a degraded maple log. Odor mild, mushroomy. Taste mild. Taste--cooked--rich, savory with slight bitter after taste. Specimen persisted for 3 weeks, with little degrading. Riparian habitat with hardwoods and redwood. July 1 fruiting time unusual in our neighborhood. 100" rain the winter before. Only 1 specimen found. Have not seen another, before or since.
