Under spruce, subalpine conifer forest.
Scattered in duff. Fruiting body 1.5-3 centimeters in diameter, round. Peridium thick, white outer surface has smoky-gray warts. Sterile base absent. Spore mass olive brown. C. cretacea is a similar but larter species of arctic and tundra regions.
