Montana State University Fungal Collection (MONT-Fungi)The fungal herbarium at Montana State University (MONT) contains approximately 1,000 dried fungal specimens, representing collections primarily from the United States, with additional material from Europe. The collection spans over a century, with specimens dating back to the early 1900s. Geographically, the greatest representation is from Montana, with an emphasis on fungi in alpine and montane habitats that reflect the state’s unique ecology. Taxonomically, the collection emphasizes the genus Russula, but it also includes diverse ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic taxa. Specimens are preserved in standard herbarium fashion as dried material, suitable for long-term curation and morphological or molecular study. Together, these holdings provide a valuable record of fungal diversity in the Northern Rockies and beyond, offering a resource for taxonomic, ecological, and biogeographic research.
