Etym.: The name refers to the shape of the stipe.

Spore-sac globose, up to 11 mm diam. Exoperidium hyphal and granular, early deciduous, except in the basal portion. Endoperidium smooth only near the peristome, the rest pitted by the scars originated by the sand grains of the exoperidium, slightly ochraceous to almost white. Mouth circular, plane. Socket inconspicuous, distinctly separated from the stem. Gleba ferrugineous. Stem concolorous, straw-coloured, notoriously tapering towards the base where it is slightly darker; 55 x 4 mm (at the apical portion), and 1.5 mm at the base, striatulate. Endoperidium formed by threads similar to those of the capillitium but wider.

Spores globose to ellipsoid, brown, perfectly smooth under L.M., some guttulate, 4.6-6.1 µm diam. Under SEM the surface appears almost smooth but with minute cracks and a notorious apiculus.Capillitium coloured thick-walled and almost solid, lumen sometimes wavy or lacunar; threads scantily branched and septate, hardly at all swollen at the coloured septa; some appearing ribbon-like and contorted; some appear also incrusted; 3.3-8.1 µm diam.

Habitat: sandy soil in arid regions.

Distribution: Africa: Soudan. North America: United States (Arizona, New Mexico). Middle East: Jordan.
