United States, Colorado, Weminuche Wilderness, Pine River Trail. Solitary fruiting body growing along the edge of the trail near Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca, Picea sp. (P. pungens or P. engelmannii), Populus tremuloides and Ameliancher alnifolia. Total height of basidiocarp: 5.8 cm (4.8 stem + 1.0 cap). Lamellae greenish yellow except for a thin brown zone where they meet the stipe apex; sinuate with deep notches; ~0.5 deep at deepest; ~2.4 cm long at longest. Pairs of full-length lamellae separated by 1 to 2 tiers of lamellulae. ~104 full-length lamellae total on basidiocarp (calculated by counting number of full-length lamellae in rough 1/4 portion of basidiocarp and multiplying by 4). Stipe pale yellow and dry; 2.6 cm wide at apex; ~1.9 cm wide at midpoint. Base of stipe enlarged and somewhat bulbous with adhering debris; appearing marginate in dried specimen; 2.1 cm wide at widest portion; 1.7 cm wide at very base. Cap slimy; 6.4 cm wide. Center of cap reddish-brown. Grayish zone between the reddish-brown center and the purple margin. Context white in cap and stem. Taste and odor indistinct. 5% KOH dark red on cap and pale yellow on context. Cap and stem surface turned red as they dried. Photos taken 2 days after collecting except for photos with 5% KOH, which were taken 3 days after.

Cap 7 mm thick where measured and possibly thicker elsewhere. Cystidia brown, encrusted and visible under low magnification. Cystidia not arranged in fascicles. Setae absent. Clamp connections present. Basidiocarp turning black with a drop of 5% KOH. I was only able to find one spore, which measured 13.5 x 4.8 ?m. This spore was only slightly above the range for V. abietina in length, but this combined with location (V. abietina is rare in Colorado while V. fimbriata is common) makes V. fimbriata more likely.
