Wright J.E. 1987. Bibliotheca Mycologia 113: 214.

Tulostoma wrightii Berkeley. (Fig. 154; Pls. XII:1; XLI:5) - Grevillea 19: 95. 1891.

Etym.: Dedicated to the collector Charles Wright.

Spore-sac globose-depressed, large, possibly abt 20 mm diam. Exoperidium probably membranous or submembranous. Endoperidium white, thick, smooth, chamois-like. Mouth fibrillose (the original diagnosis states: “..and forms a small circular stoma"). Socket conspicuous, closely embracing the stem. Stem obese, up to "60 x 4 mm", light-coloured, "ochraceous, straight, glabrous”.

Spores subglobose to elliptic, verrucose under L.M., light brown, without a halo or reticulum, 4.2-4.8 x 4.5-6 µm, averaging 5-6 µm diam when globose. Under SEM the ornamentation appears formed by low, uneven, verrucae, which may be partly anastomosed, and numerous smaller ones can be seen among the larger ones. Capillitium hyaline, scantily septate and branched; threads thick-walled, lumen solid, particularly in the older ones; 3.6-4.5 µm diam; septa scarce to absent in many slides; some appear ribbon-like.

Habitat: sandy soil in arid or semiarid regions.

Distribution: North America: SW United States (New Mexico).

Holotype: United States, New Mexico, Rio Gande, leg. Charles Wright (K!). Unfortunately the material at K is poor and in bad condition, consisting only of an incomplete specimen, particularly the stem, which is very fragmented. Although not mentioned on the label, the specific epithet and the fact that Charles Wright seems to have explored the Rio Grande region, point to him having been the collector. Furthermore, a portion of gleba at BPI indicates: "Massee, New Mexico, Charles Wright 6369, ex Type from K".

Illustration: None known.
